This Fanlink is currently underway: sorry we missed you! Please sign up for our mailing list to be the first to know about future offerings.
You’re an informed, well-educated voter. Maybe you can’t wait to cast a ballot for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Maybe you’re voting against certain candidates more than you’re voting for anyone. Perhaps you're fascinated— or frightened— by the state of our nation’s current political landscape and the outsized role of television, social platforms, and foreign influence in our political discourse.
In this Fanlink, you’ll explore the complex dynamics behind politics and fandom. Whether it’s the MAGA movement, K-Hive, Swifties4Kamala, Never Trumpers, or those sitting out the election, we’ll unpack how these movements grew and what they mean for the future of democracy.
We get it— talking about politics can be tough, especially with family, friends, or colleagues. That’s why our Fanlink offers a respectful, open environment where you can process the whirlwind of election-related news, memes, and conflicting opinions without the fear of judgment.
Join peers who feel the same way you do: scared, hopeful, worried, or curious. Together, we’ll dissect the highs and lows of the 2024 elections.
Our discussions will be led by two experienced mentors:
They will present short lectures and moderate thoughtful, respectful conversations about this historical election cycle’s stresses, joys, challenges, and lessons.
In addition to having the chance to share your thoughts and benefit from others’ perspectives, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of:
This Fanlink won’t be all talk– we will reward your actions, too! Whether you’re phone banking, fundraising, writing postcards, or registering voters, we’ll send you cool, fun gifts as positive recognition for your election-related efforts.
You don’t have to spend the next month doomscrolling— put your energy to good use and get rewarded along the way!
This Fanlink meets Mondays 5:30PM PST / 8:30PM EST on Zoom and is open to adults 18 years and older. If you’re an adult who knows a minor (ages 13-17) interested in joining, you can enroll both yourself and the minor together.
Make new connections, level up your knowledge, and be part of a unique learning experience during this historic election season!
I’m a professor of new media and performance at the University of California, Berkeley. As an educator, I’ve won four awards from my campus for teaching and advising, including the highest honor that UC Berkeley gives for instruction: the Distinguished Teaching Award. As a scholar, I’ve written about the intersection of fandom and politics for academic journals and essay collections (check out my publications here). As a public intellectual, I’ve recently given interviews about the enthusiasm of voters for the Harris/Walz ticket to NBC, CBS, CNN International, and other news organizations. I’ll never forget the rage and sorrow that filled me in November 2016 and the joy and relief I felt in November 2020. But the threat to our country’s democracy, public safety, and levels of tolerance persists today. I can’t wait to meet you in the Fanlink and talk about how traditional media and social media, popular culture and populist thinking, and the power of fannish enthusiasm and belief, have played crucial roles in American elections over the past eight years, and continue to do so now.
Elections have always been pivotal and exciting moments in my home, the thrill dating back to the days of heated arguments with my two best elementary school friends over the Reagan/Carter race in 1980. This election is definitely no less exciting. As an assistant mentor, I look forward to connecting with you around this year’s historic election. As a former Language Arts and Social Studies teacher in Trenton, NJ, someone who has worked in various education organizations serving learners from preschool through high school to adulthood, and the father of three daughters, this election means just a little bit more to me.
